Deer
Maine is home to one of the largest of the 30 recognized subspecies of white-tailed deer. After attaining maturity at age five, our bucks can reach record live weights of nearly 400 lbs. Most adult bucks, however will normally range from 200 to 300 lbs live weight, and will stand 36 to 40" at the shoulder.

Black-capped Chickadee
Little flocks of Black-capped Chickadees enliven the winter woods with their active behavior and their cheery-sounding chick-a-dee callnotes as they fly from tree to tree, often accompanied by an assortment of nuthatches, creepers, kinglets, and other birds.

Puffins
Maine ocean islands provide the only nesting sites for Atlantic puffins in the United States. Eastern Egg Rock in the midcoast region, Seal Island and Matinicus Rock at the mouth of Penobscot Bay, and Machias Seal Island and Petit Manan Island off the downeast coast provide habitat for more than 4,000 puffins each summer.

Figure 1 Beavers ( Castor canadensis) (Fig. 1) are the largest living rodents in North America, with adults averaging 40 pounds in weight and measuring more than three feet in length, including the tail. These semi-aquatic mammals have webbed hind feet, large incisors, and a broad, flat tail.

News All festivals are now open for registration. Best field trips fill fast. Don't wait. Tours are also open for registration. Five tours offered by the Maine Birding Trail and Schoodic Institute are filling fast. One July trip is booked up, and the September tour is now closed.

Harbor seal 
The harbor (or harbour) seal ( Phoca vitulina), also known as the common seal, is a true seal found along temperate and Arctic marine coastlines of the Northern Hemisphere. The most widely distributed species of pinniped (walruses, eared seals, and true seals), they are found in coastal waters of the northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans, the Baltic and North Seas.

Humpback whale
The humpback whale ( Megaptera novaeangliae) is a species of baleen whale. One of the larger rorqual species, adults range in length from 12-16 m (39-52 ft) and weigh about 36,000 kg (79,000 lb). The humpback has a distinctive body shape, with long pectoral fins and a knobbly head.
